Chris and Eric did not grow up playing hockey. Children of immigrant parents, it simply wasn't in the budget. In 2005/2006, the Yue brothers returned to their home town, Victoria. Chris was returning from Vancouver and Eric was returning from Edmonton. During their time out of town, they each had a small taste of recreational ice hockey and came home to find there were no opportunities for beginners to get involved beyond stick & puck. With a good amount of experience participating and competing in other sports, Eric decided his BA in Recreation and Chris' BSc in Kinesiology would be useful in creating Victoria's first co-ed, recreational hockey league.
After a modest 10 team inaugural season, Island Hockey 101 has been happy to host as many as 80 teams in winter and 42 teams in spring. Adding hockey clinics for the beginner as well as fun events like all-star games during the Christmas break are some of the things they've done to make us all feel closer to the stars we watch on TV. Their focus will always be the recreational player because they recognize the gift of being able to play hockey. As players who took this up as adults, they hope people know that there is no age that is too old to begin.
